Spend six days and seven nights with a small group of artists while we paint, live and relax in beautiful northern Provence. This is an area full of vineyards, lush landscapes, quiet rivers, and a host of other treasures... but thankfully without throngs of tourists!
Calvin Liang will be teaching with a focus on painting on location from direct observation. Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design and color harmony. The lessons will include 1) How to plan a composition that will be most effective for the artist's intentions and preferences; 2) How to better see and use warm and cool color in landscape; 3)How to command hardness and softness of edges to create space in a painting; 4) How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color, and drawing skills; 5) How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures and brushstoke direction over the forms; and 6) How to get the best possible results in a short time. |

Calvin will teach for five full days. We will visit different painting locations each day. There will also be one free day to relax, explore the area...or to just keep painting on your own. Please note that the workshop is strictly limited to 8 participating artists. This will allow lots of one-on-one time between artist and instructor.
The workshop will be based in the Drome region of northern Provence. Our base, the small village of Mollans-sur-Ouveze, is a gem. This tiny medieval village is completely unspoiled, and being there is like being in a step back in time. At the bottom of the village quietly flows the Ouveze river. Tall poplars and gentle mountains add charm to the area. This region is in the middle of the Cotes du Rhone, famous for it's wine and some of Provence's most beautiful villages...Vaison-la-Romain, Seguret, and Grignan, just to name a few. Here painting possibilities are endless, countryside full of vineyards and lavender, old castles, lively markets, and streets strewn with brightly colored flower boxes. |

Accommodations will be in a charming hotel in Mollans-sur-Ouveze. The hotel has a lovely pool surrounded by a large green park, with the Ouveze river flowing steps away. You can walk out of the hotel with your easel, set up and paint to your heart's content. All rooms are well appointed and include private bath. Charming out-door areas and a beautiful restaurant complete the picture.
A bountiful buffet breakfast will be provided daily. Each evening we will enjoy a delicious 4-course dinner at the hotel. The food is some of the best that I have tasted in France! |

*While it is highly recommended that artists rent a car in order to have the freedom to fully experience the area, an optional ground transportation package is offered to artists for an additional $350 fee. Included in this package is pick up upon arrival and transportation for departure to Avignon TGV station. Also included is transportation of artists to painting locations.

Workshop Canceled
A deposit of $600 will hold your place in the workshop. Deposit is refundable until 6 months prior to workshop commencement. After this date, fees will be refunded to the participant ONLY if his or her place can be filled in the workshop. Every effort will be made to fill the vacancy. Refunds will be less a $150 administrative fee.
Second payment of $1000 is due December 1, 2012.
Final payment of balance is due March 1, 2013.

Workshop must have a minimum of 6 participants 5 months prior to commencement in order to proceed as scheduled. In the even of cancellation by Open Air Italy, full refunds will be given. In the unlikely event of cancellation by named instructor, he or she will be replaced with the most qualified substitute available and participants will be notified of the change. Open Air Italy reserves the right to change any herein stated arrangements as may be necessary to best serve the participants of this workshop.
