David W. Mayer, an award winning and respected artist and teacher, is best known for his paintings which capture the beauty and color of Colorado and the West. Originally from Wisconsin, David grew up drawing, painting, and sculpting. With his talents strongly supported at home, after graduating from high school he went to art school where he studied graphic design and commercial illustration. After graduation, David pursued a career in the advertising and publishing worlds. During this period, he enjoyed painting on the side, originally in watercolor.
In 1984, Mayer moved to Colorado and became enamored with the majesty of the surrounding landscape. He was in awe of the beauty that surrounded him. He began painting in acrylics and then in oils. Eventually he moved outdoors to paint en plein air. David is a big believer in painting en plein air, knowing that it is the only way to get a true sense of color in the landscape.
David W. Mayer is a member of the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, and the Colorado Plein Air Painters. He has studied with Scott Christensen, T. Allen Lawson, Kevin MacPherson, Ted Goerschner, and David Leffel, as well as through the writings and works of Richard Schmid, Edgar Payne, Joaquin Sorolla and the California Impressionists. During his work as an award winning watercolorist, David studied with artist Tony Couch. Mayer's work has been widely exhibited and has won numerous awards.

Workshop Description
Spend seven days painting, living and relaxing in northern Provence. This is an area full of vineyards, lush landscapes, quiet rivers, lavender and a host of other treasures. Artist David Mayer will be teaching with a focus on "plein air" painting directly from nature that captures the colors, patterns, and values that photography alone cannot achieve. David has developed a structured approach to painting, ideal for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. His approach is based on blending approaches of the early plein air masters John F. Carlson, Edgar A. Payne and Emile Gruppe, as well as contemporary approaches to landscape painting. His emphasis is on providing solid processes and procedures, such as developing "shape maps" and 3-value studies, understanding outdoor landscape composition and using limited palettes for achieving real growth as an artist.
The workshop will be based in the Drome region of northern Provence. Our base, the small village of Mollans-sur-Ouveze, is a gem. This medieval village is completely unspoiled and being there is like a step back in time. At the bottom of the village quietly flows the Ouveze river. Tall poplars and gentle mountains add to the charm of the region. The area is in the middle of the Cotes du Rhone, famous for it's wine and some of Provence's most beautiful villages...Vaison-la-Romain, Seguret, Grignon, just to name a few. Here, painting possibilities are endless, countrysides full of vineyards and lavender, old castles, lively markets, and streets strewn with flower boxes.
David will teach for five full days. We will visit different painting locations each day. There will be two free days to relax, explore the area..or keep painting. On one of the free days, Sunday, June 12, we will take a trip to Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, sight of the world famous brocante market. This is an experience not to be missed!
